WE STRIVE TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE MOST VULNERABLE
OUR AMBITION IS TO HELP FREE EVERYONE’S POTENTIAL
Cartier Philanthropy is a grant-making foundation established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2012. We are guided by the standard of excellence of our founder, the Maison Cartier, but act in complete independence of its commercial activities.
We strive to help free everyone’s potential, enabling people to live a meaningful and fulfilling life in an inclusive, equitable and safe environment.
Cartier Philanthropy is governed by Swiss law and operates under the supervision of the Federal Supervisory Board for Foundations of the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs in Bern.
Our work is defined by respect, trust, integrity, and compassion: the respect of the people we try to help, the trust of the partners we engage with, the integrity that comes from consistency of purpose, process and practice, and the compassion that drives us all, as human beings, to alleviate the suffering of others.
Effective philanthropy with an enduring impact. That’s our imperative as we work to improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable, in particular women and children living in the world’s least developed regions. We are committed to restoring their dignity, reducing their vulnerability and enhancing their resilience. At the core of our mission lies the ideal of strengthening people’s knowledge, life skills and competencies, and of extending their access to water, food, education and healthcare. We believe that those living in extreme poverty can – with appropriate support in an enabling environment – regain control over their lives and become active agents in shaping their destinies. We work to multiply their choices and opportunities.
OUR CORE FUNDING AREAS
We support impact-driven initiatives in low-income countries that promote women’s economic and social development, that provide access to basic services, that engage with communities to encourage the responsible management of natural resources and that deliver humanitarian assistance when natural disasters strike.
OUR APPROACH TO PARTNERSHIPS
We award grants to non-profit organizations that are impact-driven, excel in their fields of expertise, share our values of trust, integrity and respect and whose programmes are aligned with our core funding areas.
To address systemic complexity, we are committed to clear goals with evidence-based and data-driven strategies, rigorous accountability and meticulous evaluation in order to continually improve support for people to lift themselves out of hardship, strengthen their capacities and find their own way to thrive.
We actively reach out to partners at our own initiative, targeting organisations that have proven their approach works. Irrespective of whether they are NGOs, social entrepreneurs or UN agencies, our funding is directed towards those able to show the short-, medium- and long-term changes that their actions have enabled in the lives of those served.
We engage with partners in a spirit of dialogue and close collaboration, encouraging and facilitating complementarity and synergies. We provide the flexible funding they need, working to understand and overcome any setbacks, supporting them to expand to new regions or linking them with larger actors to scale their solutions, and of course continuing to fund them for as long as they are effective.
The monitoring and evaluation process allows us to ensure that all funds are used efficiently. Beyond the measurement of specific outputs and outcomes, this process is the basis upon which we shape our action and increase future impact. It allows us to identify the success factors for possible replication and optimize the partnerships dynamic, leveraging key learnings and shared experience.
